Supporting Unique and Diverse Learners

Reading Specialist

The role of our reading specialist is to provide resources and leadership for an entire school. This can take many forms, including the crafting of special weeks to get kids in all grades excited about reading, or coming up with multiple themes to encourage reading throughout a whole school year. While a reading specialist is partly a diagnostician, he or she is also an encourager and motivator. While struggling readers may need the most individual care and attention, all students will need help from time to time in overcoming their reluctance to read or becoming more confident and relaxed readers who retain what they read well. The reading specialist not only helps our school increase its overall test scores in reading, but promotes an environment where reading is seen as an exciting thing to do.

Multi-Language Learners
In the state of Delaware, Multi-Language Learners are identified using the WIDA online screener English language proficiency test. This entry test determines whether the child is eligible for services. It also determines the  level of English Language Proficiency for each new MLL student that registers in our district.

The mission of Hanby Elementary Schools' Multi-Language Learners program is to equip our students with the social and academic language skills that they need to be successful students and community members. The K-12 MLL program provides services through several delivery models. Services are provided with the student's grade level and proficiency level in mind. Ms. Black implements teaching strategies and service delivery approaches to meet the individual needs of each of our Multi-Language Learners.

Special Education
The Special Education Department provides support and services that are offered by the District that have been designed to support specific student needs or that serve a specialized population of students.
  • Vision: The Brandywine School District's vision is that students with disabilities will reach their full potential as members of society. We embrace parents/guardians as collaborative partners in a process that promotes trust and respect. Each student shall be treated as a unique individual and shall receive appropriate inclusive education through the use of best practices based on scientific research.
  • Mission: Our mission is to make special education procedures more universal with common practices and common language, to deliver consistent effective services and instruction, and to improve the quality of our services, which will in turn improve the performance of our special education students.
If you need information or guidance on the topics listed, please contact Special Education Coordinator - Amanda Horton or  School Psychologist - Mia Posternock at Hanby: (302) 479-2220.
